Craftsmanship, Quality and Materials
All framed works are shot, post-processed, printed by the photographer. Metal prints are produced to the photographer's specifications by Bay Photo Lab in Scott's Valley, California
Printing
Each photograph is printed using a Canon imageProGraf PRO-1000 12-cartridge professional printer with Canon Lucia Pigment inks. When printed on fine art papers these inks will not fade for the manufacturer's estimate of 60 years (with proper care).
Paper
I use Moab Juniper Baryta Rag 305 fine art paper for my framed and matted works. To quote the manufacturer, the paper "...is a 100% cotton, true baryta (barium sulfate) fiber paper that offers the density of a traditional darkroom FB-type paper to hold detail in the deep blacks of the shadow regions, while producing natural white highlights that’s enhanced with a slight fiber glossy surface texture." This is a natural paper without optical brighteners. The result is eye-catching for both black & white and color.
Matting/Backing
My mats are "conservation" quality from either Nielsen-Bainbridge or Crescent. The backing is acid-free foam core or four-ply archival mat material for stiffness and durability. These are secured to each photograph with archival Scotch-brand double-sided tape and acid-free artist's tape. These materials are used in both matted and framed photographs. As noted, all my matted images fit in standard frames available at Michael’s and other art supply retailers if you choose to frame them yourself.
Frames
The frames are black anodized aluminum Nielsen-Bainbridge Radials. The top of each frame section is slightly rounded and 5/16" wide for a classic look. As I buy the framing materials in quantity and do the framing myself, my pricing is substantially lower than even economy framing stores for comparable quality.
Glazing
After substantial research and experience, I use UV-resistant acrylic glazing instead of glass. It is lighter and virtually unbreakable. The reduced weight is easier on walls and hangers. Accidents can happen in the home and office and broken glass can damage the art and its owners, children and pets. The UV-resistance protects the work against harmful sunlight and modern acrylic does not discolor with age. With proper care, the glazing is crystal clear revealing all the detail in my photographs and should last as long as the works themselves.
Presentation
As an artistic choice, all my works are printed with a white border with the title, the location of the photograph in the lower left and my signature in the lower right. After years of looking at exhibitions of untitled photographs wondering what a photo was called, where it was taken and who took it, I decided to include this information as an integral part of my presentation. Each work also has my contact information, a unique serial number and a brief anecdote regarding the work on the back.
Fine Art Cards
I also produce Fine Art Cards in several different assortments -- each is a collection of five images from my catalog. The cards are printed on my Canon printer individually with Moab Entrada Natural 5x7 folding cardstock. They are blank inside and come with an envelope. These high quality cards are stunning in their detail and suitable for any occasion.
